Dr. Austin Becker is Professor and Chair of the Department of Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island (URI). He works across the fields of planning, policy, engineering, and ocean science. His applied research engages decision makers with complex problems involving uncertainty, consequences of natural hazards, and the resulting challenges in decision making. This includes: communicating potential storm impacts to emergency managers; developing baseline knowledge about coastal hazard impacts to maritime industries and communities; and conducting vulnerability assessments for military and other coastal uses. He also directs the Graduate Certificate in Coastal Resilience program at URI. He was awarded a Sloan Foundation Research Fellow in Ocean Sciences, earned a PhD in Environment and Resources at Stanford University, and maintains a 500 Ton USCG Captain’s License.
