Senior Program Manager
Port of Long Beach
Sunny Zia is a California Registered Civil Engineer and Senior Program Manager at the Port of Long Beach, with twenty-eight years of experience managing Construction, Environmental, Water and Infrastructure projects. She currently oversees twenty projects including project management and delivery of large-scale dredging, wharf, railroad, roadway and utility capital improvement and infrastructure projects.
She was the first female to graduate from her class of Civil Engineering with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Tehran. She later graduated with honors and received a Master of Science from University of California, Irvine in Civil Engineering, Water Resources.
As an Engineering Senior Program Manager with the Port of Long Beach, her accomplishments include securing more than $38 million in reimbursement funds from a petroleum company and leading oversight of over $2.4 billion dollars of contracting activities at the Port resulting in over $12M of annual savings.
Ms. Zia is the first Registered Civil Engineer to hold elected office in the City of Long Beach. She is serving her eleventh year, third term, on the Long Beach Community College District Board, representing approximately 105,000 Long Beach residents as a Trustee.
Under her leadership as a Trustee, she has helped establish policies and measures supporting students experiencing food and housing insecurity, support for formerly incarcerated youth and led building public private partnerships to support a pipeline for the career and educational future of the students.
