3D BIM-GIS Model for Digital Transformation of Inland Waterways in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a comprehensive digital survey of inland waterway network in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Encompassing 82 routes totaling 522.8 km, the survey meticulously mapped over 5,500 hectares underwater and the entire 10,000 hectares along both banks. It also documented 217 bridges/culverts and 146 ports/docks.

The survey employed a cutting-edge combination of underwater and overland techniques. Underwater surveys utilized multi-beam echo sounders paired with autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for high-accuracy results, even in challenging areas like narrow channels and silted zones. Overland surveys were conducted using a variety of technologies. 3D Laser scanners captured detailed models of bridges and culverts with millimeter-level accuracy and high-speed scanning with a scanning range from 130 meters to 1 kilometer. Additionally, a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with Lidar, 3D Laser scanning and Photogrammetry created a comprehensive 3D model of existing riverside structures and surroundings. Mobile mapping systems mounted on vehicles was used to collect data on road and bridge conditions.

The survey results were used to create a 3D digital model integrating Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Geographic Information System (GIS) technology for the entire inland waterway system in Ho Chi Minh City. This comprehensive model captures the depth of waterways, the condition of riverbanks and the location of bridges, culverts, and other structures. The application of technology with modern equipment reduced survey time by 30-40% compared to conventional methods. The resulting 100% 3D model boasts superior accuracy compared to conventional 2D products.

The 3D digital model offers a wealth of detailed information. Every point on the riverbed surface has precise coordinates and elevation data, accurate to within millimeters. This allows for the effortless measurement of dimensions, area, shape, and structure of any underwater feature. Additionally, the model integrates construction information to facilitate efficient maintenance, operation, and management.

Beyond the riverbed, the model provides valuable data for various applications. It allows for the export of depth charts at any scale and the generation of cross-sections along the entire channel. This information is crucial for designing embankments, ports, and wharves, all while considering existing infrastructure details within the construction information model. Furthermore, the model can be processed to classify and extract terrain and constructions, providing valuable insights for urban planning, refurbishment projects, and landscape design initiatives along the riverbanks.

The successful completion of this survey marks a significant milestone for Ho Chi Minh City's inland waterway management. The 3D BIM-GIS model provides a comprehensive and accurate representation, empowering authorities to enhance the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of inland waterway transportation within the city.
